Robbie Lawler will enter the UFC 214 Octagon tomorrow night (Sat., July 29, 2017) at UFC 214 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., for the first time since losing his UFC welterweight title to Tyron Woodley one year ago.

Unfortunately for “Ruthless,” long-time friend and former coach Matt Hughes will not be by his side, as the UFC Hall of Famer recovers from injuries suffered in a car-train accident this past June.

“Yeah, it’s been hard,” Lawler said at UFC 214’s media day earlier this week. “He’s usually here with us right by our side, hanging out, making sure I’m alright. It is what it is. He’s doing better, but that’s something his family should talk about and let the media know through their outlets, not mine.Having not fought since UFC 201, Lawler is currently experiencing the longest layoff of his 16-year career. When the former UFC champion steps back inside of the cage at UFC 214, he’ll be given the task of disposing of hard-nosed veteran Donald Cerrone, who is coming off a knockout loss at the hands of Jorge Masvidal. That’s a tough return to action for Lawler, especially considering “Ruthless” has to block out his emotions regarding Hughes.

“It’s not on my mind until like somebody asks me,” Lawler said, “Because I’m pretty good at focusing on what I need to focus on. But yeah. It’s rough.”

If Lawler is able to knock off Cerrone at UFC 214 and recapture the divisional pizzazz he possessed just one year ago, he’ll quickly reestablish himself as a title threat entering 2018 and give Hughes something to smile about.

Good news, everyone! If the excruciatingly painful structure of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor press conferences had you longing for the comparatively smooth workings of a UFC press conference, you’re getting one today (Wednesday, July 26th)!

Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones will command the majority of the questions at the UFC 214presser, but they won’t be the only ones there. Co-headliners Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia, as well as women’s featherweight title challengers Cris Cyborg and Tonya Evinger will also be present. Leading the proceedings will be none other than UFC president Dana White.

You can watch the UFC 214: Cormier vs. Jones 2 pre-fight presser at the top of the page, beginning at 4 PM ET/1 PM PT. Be sure to follow the @BloodyElbow Twitter account, as our own Michael Hutchinson will be live-tweeting the best bits throughout the event, and we will have follow-up content on the site itself, including the staredown videos.

The UFC 214 weigh-in results are rolling in today (July 28) at 12 p.m. ET.

All 24 fighters on the card are set to tip the scales shortly. In the main event of tomorrow night’s card, light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones will throw leather for the 205-pound gold.

Co-headliners Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia are also in a title bout with “The Chosen One” defending his welterweight championship. Cris Cyborg and Tonya Evinger will also be competing for the vacant women’s featherweight title.

The UFC is kicking off the final fight week of July with a media conference call for this Saturday’s UFC 214 card in Anaheim, California. While Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones will obviously command center stage, co-headliners Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia, as well as Cris Cyborg and Tonya Evinger are also participating today.

You can listen to the UFC 214 media conference call at the top of the page, starting at 5 PM ET/2 PM PT.

Here’s the full lineup for Saturday’s super card:

Main Card (PPV, 10pm ET)

Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones [LHW Title]

Tyron Woodley vs. Demian Maia [WW Title]

Cris Cyborg vs. Tonya Evinger [Women’s FW Title]

Robbie Lawler vs. Donald Cerrone

Jimi Manuwa vs. Volkan Oezdemir

Preliminary card (FXX, 8pm ET)

Jason Knight vs. Ricardo Lamas

Renan Barao vs. Aljamain Sterling

Brian Ortega vs. Renato Moicano

Calvin Kattar vs. Andre Fili

Fight Pass Card (6:30pm ET)

Kailin Curran vs. Alexandra Albu

Eric Shelton vs. Jarred Brooks

Josh Burkman vs. Drew Dober

Calvin Kattar has waited a long time to fight in the Octagon, and now he’s a day away from his promotional debut.

Kattar is scheduled to compete as a UFC fighter for the first time on the UFC 214 preliminary card against Andre Fili. He accepted the fight on short notice after Doo Ho Choi pulled out of the Anaheim, CA, pay-per-view card, and has had two months to prepare for the biggest fight of his life.

Kattar isn’t too bothered about being a short-notice replacement. After all, that seems to be the best way to get into the UFC nowadays. The featherweight was, however, somewhat confused as to why the UFC did not sign him to fight Fili right after Fili’s original opponent, Choi, was announced off the card in mid June. He could have had over a month to prepare for “Touchy.”

“That is kind of interesting; I was wondering the same thing, actually,” Kattar told BloodyElbow.com. “But I’m just happy that I got the call when I did, no matter when it was. This is the opportunity that I’ve been waiting for, and I’m very ready for it.”

Kattar is a sizable underdog ahead of his Saturday night debut, and the Massachusetts-based fighter said that has decreased the amount of pressure he is feeling. He hasn’t been a betting underdog in over four years, so he doesn’t mind his opponent being favored for the first time in awhile.

That said, his expectations for himself are still high.“It’s nice to be the underdog for the first time in quite awhile,” he said. “But at the end of the day, I do hold myself accountable to a certain level of performance, which is why I’m here today. I expect a lot out of myself and I won’t be happy unless I go out there and perform to my capabilities.”

Kattar’s official nickname is “The Boston Finisher,” yet the 29-year-old’s last six wins have all come by way of decision, and he hasn’t won a fight inside the distance since 2010. So where’d the nickname come from, you ask, and how will he live up to it at UFC 214?

Reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will run it back with former division kingpin Jon Jones at the upcoming UFC 214 pay-per-view (PPV) event on Sat., July 29, 2017 inside Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

While both “DC” and “Bones” have been making the rounds in recent days (sample), they’ll now have their official pre-fight conference call with the mixed martial arts (MMA) media to discuss this weekend’s big shebang.

The festivities get underway at 5 p.m. ET in the embedded player above.

A mere four months ago, London native Manuwa seemingly moved in pole position for a shot at the UFC light-heavyweight title with an emphatic first-round knockout victory over Corey Anderson.

In the eyes of many mixed martial arts fans, Manuwa’s impressive victory Anderson, his second stoppage win on the bounce, solidified his status as the No.1 contender for the 205lbs title, which is currently wrapped around the waist of Daniel Cormier. In need of pay-per-view-selling fights, the UFC brass decided against giving Manuwa his first shot at UFC gold, opting instead to book a rematch UFC 214 Live between Cormier and his bitter rival Jon Jones – which headlines UFC 214.

UFC 214 LIVE

Heading into Saturday’s UFC 214, it appears from the surface that current light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and former 205-pound champion Jon Jones are on top of their respective games. Cormier and Jones each only have one loss: Cormier to Jones at UFC 182, and Jones on a controversial disqualification to Matt Hamill in 2009.

They are the two best pound-for-pound fighters in the world heading into the biggest fight of their careers. It’s a crossroads bout for both.

MORE: Jones says he beat Cormier “after weekend of cocaine”

LIVE TV

Cormier (19-1) has conquered things in life only a select few can only dream about. He’s a two-time Olympian (2004, ’08) and won the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix in 2012, which featured the likes of former heavyweight champions Fedor Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem, Fabricio Werdum and Josh Barnett.

The 38-year-old Cormier then moved to the UFC at heavyweight, going undefeated by beating Roy Nelson and former two-time UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir. Deciding he didn’t want to face good friend, training partner and then-UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, Cormier moved down to light heavyweight where a fight against Jones seemed inevitable.

Cormier did come short on that fateful January night in 2015, but he always knew he would meet Jones again. He didn’t expect it to be over two years later and going into the fight as the champion.

Cormier won the title from Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 after the UFC stripped Jones of his title. He made successful title defenses against Alexander Gustafsson, a rematch with Johnson and sandwiched in between, a non-title affair against Anderson Silva.

Jones (22-1) made his UFC debut at UFC 87 and steamrolled everyone in his path to become the youngest UFC champion of all time at the age of 23 when he stopped “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128. “Bones” went through a murderers’ row, defeating former UFC champions Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans and Vitor Belfort in succession.

Jones also went on to make title defenses against Chael Sonnen, Alexander Gustafsson, Glover Teixeira and Cormier.

His toughest test inside the octagon was Gustafsson — but his toughest test in life began before his first fight with Cormier.

Before the fight took place, Jones had failed an out-of-competition drug test for cocaine — it was revealed shortly after the fight had occurred. He had a brief stay in rehab and told the world he was OK.

Except, he wasn’t.

While preparing to face Johnson at the aforementioned UFC 187, Jones was involved in a hit-and-run accident in Albuquerque, N.M., involving a pregnant woman. The father left the scene, came back to his vehicle to grab some money and fled the scene. Subsequently, the UFC stripped him of the title and suspended him indefinitely.

Jones made his return at UFC 197, defeating Ovince Saint Preux to become the interim champion and set up a unification bout with Cormier for UFC 200.

Heading into the fight, the trash talk was intense and you could cut the tension with a knife. But it was all for naught as 72 hours before the fight, the UFC announced Jones had failed a drug test and pulled him from the fight. Jones was suspended for one year.

MORE: Jones vs Cormier 2: Date, time, PPV price

Cormier needs this win more he has ever needed anything in his athletic career. Jones calls him a paper champion because Cormier didn’t beat him. It’s hard to disagree with Jones since that is the case, but the 30-year-old has no one to blame but himself for all this happening.

No one told Jones to do drugs, leave the scene of an accident or fail a drug test. He made those choices by himself and put himself in this position. Cormier went and did what any fighter would do: seize the moment. He won the title fairly, and when called upon, fought and won. It isn’t his fault Jones can’t keep it together.

But what if Cormier fails to conquer his biggest rival? He will be known as the fighter who could never win the big one when the all the chips were on the line. He could always go back to heavyweight, but that seems unlikely as long as Velasquez is around.

If he does what many don’t expect him to do, then a case can be made for Cormier to be recognized as the greatest fighter of all time. But a loss at UFC 214 would be the end of his career. He would never get another title shot at Jones.

On the other hand, this is all about redemption for Jones. A win puts Cormier in his rearview mirror, and allows him to move on to a potential rematch with Gustafsson or a recently discussed mega-fight with Brock Lesnar.

A loss would be devastating for Jones as well. It would show he is a shell of his former self; he would no longer be thought of as the greatest fighter in the history of the sport. His career would continue, but would never be viewed in the same light.

It all comes down to Saturday night inside the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. One career moves forward, while another fades into the sunset.

Manny Pacquiao Vs Jeff Horn

PACQUIAO VS HORN PREMIER  LEAGUE 2017 Date Time TV Info How To Watch Live Stream Online, Watch PACQUIAO VS HORN and all Sports Live all the games, highlights and interviews live on your PC.
Manny Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao Press Conference Record: 59-6-2 (38 KO) … Streak: W1 … Last 5: 4-1 … Last 10: 7-3 … Stance: Southpaw … Height/Reach: 5’5½” / 67″ … Age: 38

Thoughts: Manny Pacquiao is a 38-year-old Senator who is also the WBO welterweight champion and may still, in fact, be the best welterweight in the sport.

PACQUIAO VS HORN

Manny Pacquiao Press Conference

A bit has been made of Pacquiao being a part-time fighter, and while it’s surely true he doesn’t stay in the gym as much as he did in his prime years, he fought twice in 2016 just like most top names in the sport do, beating Timothy Bradley Jr in an unnecessary third fight in April, a clear decision where he dropped Bradley twice, and Jessie Vargas in November, a clear decision where he dropped Vargas once.

Bradley and Vargas would beat Jeff Horn, more likely than not. They’re proven on a higher level. They are, as far as it’s possible to tell, better fighters than Horn. And Pacquiao was demonstrably better than both of them last year. Not three years, five years, or 10 years ago, but last year. This isn’t ancient history.

So if you’re waiting for Manny Pacquiao to slip to a level where Jeff Horn is a real threat to him, I don’t think we’re there. Even if he’s somewhat distracted and not at his very best, he’s probably still too good for Jeff Horn. He’s simply on another level. Decent conditioning and muscle memory could probably lead Pacquiao to victory here. It’s just not a competitive matchup on paper.
Jeff Horn
Jeff Horn Training Session Photo by Chris Hyde/Getty Images
9

Thoughts: Jeff Horn is not a bad fighter. Just overmatched on paper. There are some arguments for him that the hopeful are floating.

“He’s bigger!”

Almost everyone is bigger than Pacquiao at 147. Jessie Vargas was bigger last November. Chris Algieri was bigger. It didn’t help either.

“He’s younger!”

Again, Vargas was younger and fresher. Didn’t help. And Vargas has done more as a pro than Horn. Vargas, on paper, was a tougher matchup. Pacquiao routed him.

Jeff Horn Training Session

es, he did. He made it to the quarterfinals at London 2012 before getting blown away by Denys Berinchyk of Ukraine. Horn didn’t roll over — he gave a valiant effort — but Berinchyk was superior. Horn never did shine in big international tournaments, in fact. He fought in the 2011 World Amateur Boxing Championships, too, and lost to Everton Lopes in the second round.

These weren’t bad losses for these competitions. Lopes won the 2011 Worlds. Berinchyk won silver in London. But they were sort of the level cap for Horn as an amateur.

As a professional, “The Hornet’s” most notable wins have come over Randall Bailey, a one-trick pony past his prime, and Ali Funeka. Maybe you’d argue Viktor Plotnikov instead of Funeka or Bailey? The point is, he hasn’t yet been in with a single world fringe contender, let alone a true world class opponent. That doesn’t mean he can’t fight at that level, it means he hasn’t proven it.

Based on what I know about Horn and what you can see of him in the ring on tape, he’s not on Pacquiao’s level. He is, frankly, not really close to Pacquiao’s level.

The good news for Jeff Horn is nobody expects him to win or even be competitive, really. It’s a no-lose situation for him. If he shocks the world and wins the WBO title and knocks off an icon, then obviously that’s a huge win. If he gets sparked or just shut out over 12, what’s the harm? It’s Manny Pacquiao.

Matchup Grade: D. I’m not going to give it an F, because I don’t hate the fight, I just don’t think it’s going to be a matchup anyone thinks about come Monday. Pacquiao is up here, on this level. Jeff Horn is down here, on this one. Jeff Horn could beat Conor McGregor in boxing. He can’t beat Manny Pacquiao. He’s not good enough, and even if he had the potential to be, he doesn’t have the right experience to have prepared him.

Undercard

Jerwin Ancajas vs Teiru Kinoshita: (26-1-1, 17 KO) holds the IBF super flyweight title, while Kinoshita (25-1-1, 8 KO) is a … fringe contender at this point. His last two wins have come over guys making their debuts, and here are the records of his opponents recently other than those two: 0-9, 9-2-2, 1-10, 0-2. HEY! But he did lose (badly) to Zolani Tete back in 2014. Kinoshita doesn’t deserve a title shot based on his ring results, but here we are anyway.
Umar Salamov vs Damien Hooper: Hooper (12-1, 8 KO) was another Australian Olympian in 2012, more hyped than Horn, as he had been a standout youth amateur. Like Horn, he didn’t deliver at the 2011 Worlds or London 2012, but he was a talent. More troublingly, he was knocked out in 21 seconds by a guy named Rob Powdrill as a pro in 2014, stunting his professional development. Most recently, he did beat veteran Nader Hamdan in December. He’s a talented fighter whose dedication has been questioned in the past. Salamov (19-0, 14 KO) is a serious light heavyweight prospect, a 23-year-old from Russia now fighting out of Las Vegas. It’s a big fight for both guys at this stage of their careers, and writing off Hooper’s one loss as a fluky thing (which I think is fair), it’s probably the most evenly matched fight on this card. And I don’t think it’s airing on U.S. TV.
Shane Mosley Jr vs David Toussaint: Mosley (10-1, 7 KO) has never really struck me as a standout prospect at 160. He’s got the legacy and the name, but then so do a lot of fighters. He lost a four-round split decision early in his career in 2014, but has bounced back from that, too, which does show dedication and commitment — when the going got tough, he didn’t give up. Toussaint (10-0, 8 KO) is an Aussie prospect I know nothing about.
Michael Conlan vs Jarrett Owen: Conlan (2-0, 2 KO) is an obvious pet
